JOPLIN, MO — In a rematch from last year’s MIAA championship, underdog Missouri Southern took down Central Missouri in a massive upset in the MIAA baseball tournament quarterfinal. In what was a previous game filled with home runs and extra base knocks, MSSU’s game against the Mules will be remembered as one where all seven Lions runs scored without a single hit. MSSU jumped ahead in the first inning via a bases loaded hit-by-pitch from Nate Mieszkowski.

The Gorillas first round matchup will be against Rogers State, the same team that would knock them out of MIAA tournament play in the semifinal round. Despite falling to the Hillcats, PSU got the better of Rogers State in both regular season meetings this year.

SENECA, MO — Seneca baseball took down Branson at home thanks to a big fifth inning from the Indians’ bats. Trailing 2-0, Seneca’s Ian Heffren got the Indians on the board with a squeeze play in the bottom of the second frame. Facing just a one-run deficit, a Hagen Ginger tripled scoring two runs in the fourth to give Seneca the lead. Jagger Wilson then followed up with a triple of his own in the fifth, scoring a pair, and helping himself out on the mound.

JOPLIN, MO — The NCAA division II national tournament brackets were released early Monday morning and both Missouri Southern and Pitt State earned spots. Ranked the #6 seed, the Lions will travel down to Magnolia, Arkansas to take on #3 seeded Augustana. Pitt State also earned a spot in the tournament as the #5 seed, as the Gorillas will make the trip down to Edmond, Oklahoma to face #4 seeded Rogers State.

Play #5: New Heights’ Smoke Ezell & Brodrick Burns (Strike ’em out, throw ’em out double play) —New Heights pitcher Smoke Ezell and catcher Brodrick Burns combined for the classic “strike ’em out, throw ’em out” double play against Wheaton last week. Ezell struck out 12 batters as the Cougars went on to win 11-1.
