    In his classic short story, “The Night the Bed Fell,” humorist James Thurber remembered “a nervous first cousin of mine,” who never went to sleep without a glass of “spirits of camphor, a powerful reviver,” by his bed. He instructed anyone nearby to guard him closely, and if he stopped breathing during his sleep, they were to dash that in his face to arouse him. (Spoiler alert: They did.) In Thurber’s tale, this was just one of a series of misadventures his family endured on that memorable night.

    In less than a minute the boat rolled over, pitching the young woman and her fellow passengers into the river. The current was swift, the water surprisingly cold. Frantically, she kicked and splashed in a desperate effort to stay afloat. It was no use. She had no life preserver, and her waterlogged dress twisted around her legs. When she tried to scream out, the muddy water choked her.
