WASHINGTON — A St. Cloud volunteer known for sending countless care packages to U.S. troops has been honored at the Pentagon. Becky Carlson received the Zachary and Elizabeth Fisher Distinguished Civilian Humanitarian Award from the U.S. Air Force on Wednesday, Nov. 20, in Washington, D.C. She was recognized for her nonprofit organization, Becky’s Troop Care Packages, according to a news release from U.S. Rep. Tom Emmer's office.

SAUK RAPIDS — Hudson Behling might see himself as a small-town kid from Sauk Rapids, but he’s about to make it on the big screen. The 14-year-old eighth-grader recently returned from two months in Winnipeg, Canada. He is starring as the main character in “Altar,” an A24 horror movie set to hit theaters next year. “I’m just a small kid from Sauk Rapids. I would’ve never thought a small-town kid would get a lead role in a movie,” Hudson said.

MORRIS, Minn. — The whirring sound of power being generated is met with cows chewing their cud and whipping their tales side to side under sunny skies near the University of Minnesota Morris. The backdrop of organic dairy cows grazing beneath the shade of hundreds of solar panels was a sight to behold by a group of students, staff, politicians and the public during a dedication ceremony on Sept. 6 for what’s believed to be the largest agrivoltaic pasture in the Midwest.

SARTELL, Minn. — The fifth-generation Udermann family farm, Meadowbrook Farm, near Sartell, in central Minnesota, includes an 80-head dairy, 300 feeder steers, 1,000 acres of row crops (corn, soybeans, small grains and rye) and a custom no-till planting and manure hauling business as well. All these parts are kept running by three farm families each doing their part. One part of the operation is Kirsten, who joined the family in 2017 when she married Alex Udermann.

ST. CLOUD — When Janelle Kendall was 7 years old, her parents bought her a three-stringed ukulele. Soon, her instructor told her parents she had mastered the instrument. “I remember him saying, ‘She's mastered this in six weeks. She needs six strings. I can teach her things. She gets it. She's soaking it in as fast as I can give it to her,’” Kendall said. So her parents got her a three-quarter-sized guitar, and she was off. Kendall is known for something else in Central Minnesota.

ST. CLOUD — Six awards will be presented to community members today during Granite City Days' opening ceremonies. Mayor Dave Kleis' annual Rock On awards recognize local individuals or groups who demonstrate outstanding leadership and participation in the community. The awards will be presented at 7 p.m. today, June 27, at Ritsche Auditorium on the St. Cloud State University campus. ST. CLOUD — Hennen Furniture in St. Cloud will be closed on Thursday, June 27, for the funeral of its founder, Bob Hennen. Hennen, 89, died on Monday, June 17, according to his obituary. His funeral is 11 a.m. Thursday, June 27, at Sacred Heart Catholic Church at 2875 10th Ave. NE in Sauk Rapids. Visitation will be 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 26, at the church, and one hour prior to the service Thursday at the church. Hennen founded Hennen Furniture in St. Cloud in 1967.

ST. PAUL — Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz recommends a $3 million general fund request in 2025 for in-home water treatment systems to remove nitrates from drinking water. This is in addition to a framework of plans in place and in motion toward addressing nitrate issues in the state highlighted by the EPA in 2023. The Minnesota House Agriculture Finance and Policy Committee reviewed Walz’s supplemental agriculture finance proposal on April 4.

Perhaps some of you have read about the terminology for mothers that has been going around. There’s the crunchy mom, the silky mom and the scrunchy mom to name a few. I’m sure others are being added by the day, but I am focusing on these at the moment as they seem to have a bit of longevity. I have to say I'm not a big fan of any of the labels. It just feels like name-calling.
