FARGO — As a former elementary school principal, Liann Hanson said it’s common to see children in fourth and fifth grades, ages 9 or 10, with cellphones. Hanson’s 8-year-old son, who has a smartwatch but not a cellphone, often asks when it’s his turn. “I keep telling him, high school. We’ll see how long that lasts,” she said, with a laugh.

MOORHEAD — The Moorhead school district may not have to cut as many bus routes this fall as first thought as part of plans to address an ongoing budget shortfall in the district. The district is, however, considering a possible special election to help fill some of the budget gaps, as laid out in the school board’s Monday, April 28, meeting.

HUNTER, N.D. — The new head of the Northern Cass School district will have more extensive responsibilities but a shorter commute with his new job. The School Board in Hunter chose Terry Baesler, high school principal for Hillsboro Public Schools in Hillsboro, N.D., as the district’s new superintendent, during a special meeting on Wednesday, April 30. Hunter, in northern Cass County, is approximately 30 miles southwest of Hillsboro, in Traill County.

HUNTER, N.D. — With its superintendent leaving to lead the public school district in Fargo, a district 40 miles north of there has named three finalists as possible replacements. The Northern Cass school board, in Hunter, chose one principal and two superintendents, all from rural districts, as finalists for its superintendent opening during a special meeting Wednesday, April 23. Northern Cass received nine applications for the superintendent position, a district employee said.

BISMARCK — A new North Dakota law is expected to put checks on the influence that artificial intelligence and algorithms have on health care decisions, resulting in fewer delays in treatment and medication for patients. On Wednesday, April 23, Gov. Kelly Armstrong signed Senate Bill 2280, which aims to reform the “prior authorization” process for patients needing imaging services, medications and surgeries.
