A State of Michigan building has been renamed after former U.S. Sen. Debbie Stabenow to honor her decades of service in Lansing and Washington, D.C.Gov. Gretchen Whitmer on Wednesday, May 7, signed an executive order renaming Constitution Hall in Lansing to the Deborah A. Stabenow Building. That same day, Whitmer and Stabenow unveiled the building’s new signage reflecting the name change.

President Donald Trump has put the idea of Canada becoming the 51st state “behind us,” according to Michigan’s Pete Hoekstra, the U.S. ambassador to Canada. “From my standpoint, from the president’s standpoint, 51st state’s not coming back,” Hoekstra told Canadian newspaper the National Post.

House Republicans are urging state and local governments in Michigan to use “Gulf of America” instead of “Gulf of Mexico” in all official communications and references. The resolution passed Wednesday, May 7, by a voice vote in the House urges all public bodies, agencies and departments in the state to make thename change by July 4. State and local governments are not required to make the change. The measure aligns with President Donald Trump’s Jan.

For the parents of Patrick Lyoya, the jury’s failure to reach a verdict in the murder trial of former Grand Rapids police officer Christopher Schurr was like reliving the pain of their son’s death. “It seems like we are reborn of the wound and the image of my son was killed, it came back again,” said Patrick’s father, Peter Lyoya, through an interpreter.

Jurors in the Christopher Schurr murder trial are set to return Thursday morning for a fourth day of deliberations. After about 19 hours of deliberations this week, the jury did not deliver a verdict Wednesday on the charges of second-degree murder and voluntary manslaughter against Schurr. The charges stem from Schurr, then a Grand Rapids police officer, fatally shooting Black motorist Patrick Lyoya during a traffic stop April 4, 2022.
