With the help of some Michigan representatives, the U.S. House on Thursday passed Republican legislation that would require proof of American citizenship to register to vote in federal elections. Proponents say the measure would help prevent non-citizens from voting in elections. Opponents, however, have warned the proposed law risks disenfranchising millions of Americans who don’t have ready access to or can’t afford proper documents that prove citizenship.

Five years ago President Donald Trump dismissed Gov. Gretchen Whitmer as “the woman in Michigan” and “Half Whitmer” amid a spat over handling the COVID-19 pandemic. On Wednesday, Trump said he was honored to have Whitmer in the Oval Office as his guest and signaled he would help Michigan keep invasive Asian carp out of Lake Michigan and bring new fighter jets to Selfridge Air National Guard Base in Macomb County. “She’s really done an excellent job,” he said.
