The 43-year-old Wichita man who was fatally shot by an officer after running from police and entering a man’s home while armed with a knife had bourbon drinks with his hostage and tried to offer police the man in exchange for Percocet, according to a report released Wednesday by the Sedgwick County District Attorney’s Office.

The Wichita area could see a blend of hail, high gusts, record heat and thunderstorms in the coming days, starting with the potential for severe weather Wednesday night. There is a slight chance of rain and thunderstorms starting after 7 p.m. Wednesday, with chances increasing around 10 p.m. before waning early Thursday morning. The storm could also bring 50 mph gusts and dime to quarter-sized hail. Wind gusts had already reached 40 by noon.

Wind is pushing smoke across K-96 just west of I-235 in northwest Wichita from a contained landfill fire just south of that area, Sedgwick County officials said in a news release Wednesday morning. Drivers should be cautious when passing through the areas, officials said. Cornejo & Sons, which owns Construction, Demolition & Recycle landfill at 4250 West 37th Street North, where the fire started Tuesday night, put up signs along the highway to let drivers know there is no reason to call 911.

Roughly 150 chickens perished in a fire Tuesday at a residence south of Valley Center. Authorities were originally called at 3:25 p.m. to a barn fire at a home in the 1300 block of South Meridian. Fire crews arrived at a residence and found a 20-by-40 foot chicken coop on fire behind the house, Valley Center fire chief Lonnie Tormey said in a phone call. Firefighters quickly put out the fire, with only one building near the coop getting heat damage.

A 50-year-old Wichita woman was arrested after a 4-year-old girl accidentally shot herself at a south Wichita business on Friday, Wichita police said Saturday morning. The woman, who was arrested on suspicion of aggravated child endangerment, is the child’s guardian, police spokesperson Kristopher Gupilan said in a news release. The girl was shot in the lower torso. She remained hospitalized in critical condition, Gupilan said in the news release around 9:45 a.m. Saturday.
