The plan for a public splash pad on the former East Reading Pool site is not just about replacing an old facility, Mayor Eddie Moran said. “It’s about building something that works for the community today and will still work for them tomorrow,” Moran said in a release announcing completion of the demolition phase of the project. This update marks a major step forward in the city’s plans to transform the site into a new community splash pad and public-use parking lot, the mayor said.

The Southern Junior High/Middle School Alumni Association celebrated the school and its former students with two recent events. The achievements of three notable alumni were acknowledged May 30 during an alumni Hall of Fame induction ceremony in the school gymnasium. The following day, the organization held its biennial reunion at the DoubleTree Hotel by Hilton in Reading. Those inducted were District Judge Sandy Eshelman Fegley, Bart L. Ganster and Kirk Sanocki, the association announced.

The Reading Public Library raised over $20,000 at its 11th annual Celebrity Bartender fundraiser. The event May 14 at Saucony Creek Franklin Station Brewpub was the most successful in the fundraiser’s history, the library said in a release. The proceeds will support programs across all four library branches and benefit children, teens and adults through free access to music, art and educational programming.

This year’s parade promises a nostalgic journey filled with historic World War II vehicles, reenactment troops in period uniforms and live music by the Snack Club Quartet, the city said in a release.

When Lori Lilley set out to rescue turtles from the Crystal Lake reconstruction site in March, she didn’t expect to find many. “I had made the comment, ‘If I just save one, I’ll be happy,’” she said. Her first day, Lilley of Lower Alsace Township and a crew from Aark Wildlife Rehabilitation and Education Center, Chalfont, Bucks County, pulled three specimens from the mud of the drained lake. Lilley and her husband, Christopher, have kept at it since then.
