DAVENPORT, Iowa — Juneteenth is coming up on Thursday, June 19. Officially known as Juneteenth National Independence Day, the day became a federal holiday in 2021 and commemorates the announcement of the abolition of slavery in Texas on June 19, 1865. More broadly, the day is used to celebrate Black and African Americans' freedom and achievements. The Quad Cities community has two events coming up to commemorate the holiday.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A man has been arrested after he allegedly smashed numerous windows at prominent buildings in Davenport and Rock Island. On Tuesday morning, the Rock Island Police Department said on social media that the doors to the station's lobby were damaged, asking people to use an alternative entrance. Broken and damaged windows were also noted at the Robert Young Center in Rock Island and Hotel Blackhawk in Davenport.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — A second person has been charged with murder in connection with a Davenport homicide that took place over the weekend. Just after 3 a.m. on Sunday, June 8, police, fire and EMS officials responded to the 1700 block of Gaines Street for reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, first responders found an adult man with apparent gunshot wounds. Officials said they began rendering aid. The victim was transported to a local hospital for treatment, where he died from his injuries.
