Pope Francis took his name after St. Francis of Assisi to signify simplicity, humility and concern for the poor. Before taking that name, he was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Buenos Aires, Argentina.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — After more than 36 years of service, Muscatine Fire Chief Jerry Ewers is stepping away. Ewers will retire effective Wednesday, April 30. A graduate of Clinton High School, Ewers joined the department after serving as a combat medic in the army from 1985 to 1988. He's held every rank in the department, beginning as a firefighter before later serving as EMS coordinator, lieutenant, captain and assistant fire chief. He was promoted to chief in 2009.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — An investigation into a suspicious package left outside the Scott County Courthouse has determined there was no threat. According to Scott County Sheriff Tim Lane, a package was dropped off at 8:36 p.m. on the evening of Tuesday, April 15. The package was deemed suspicious, and law enforcement investigated the package. Lane said investigators were able to determine that the contents of the package were not threatening.
