Hundreds of cars will cross the block next week in Monterey across at least five auctions. The usual Ferraris, Duesenbergs, Corvettes, Jaguars, Cobras and the like will make the headlines, which we will be certain to report on. But there are plenty of far less common machines that are possibly more exciting, not because of their value, but because of their rarity, weirdness, or even ambitiousness. These vehicles are simply not seen every day and several of them are literally unique.

Among the list of vehicles successfully sold last week via Hemmings Auctions and Hemmings Make Offer were a pair of German cars, though with very distinct purposes. A Porsche Boxster S, the mid-engined sports car renowned for its precise handling found a new home, as did a Mercedes-Benz 300D Turbodiesel sedan, the sort of car that cemented the automaker’s reputation for building seemingly indestructible cars.

Honda’s once-forgotten wedge-shaped supercar concept is making a public appearance for the first time in four-decades. Straight out of the mid-1980s, the Pininfarina-designed Honda HP-X concept car has been meticulously restored to compete on the main stage of the 2024 Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance which takes place on Sunday, August 18. The Honda HP-X was first introduced at the 1984 Turin Motor Show, well before the iconic Honda NSX came to fruition.
