U-46 plans to cover cost of high school juniors taking the ACT in fall

School District U-46 will pay for high school juniors to take the ACT test in the fall in an effort to familiarize students with the exam, meet dual-credit application requirements and potentially boost scores. The standardized tests will cost $121,862 according to a proposal endorsed Monday by the U-46 school board and to be formally approved June 16.

U-46 middle-schoolers to have no cellphone access during school day

When U-46 middle school students head back to class in August, the cellphones and smart watches they bring with them will be placed in pouches and kept out of reach during school hours. On Monday, the District U-46 School Board is set to award a $172,750 contract to Yondr Inc. to purchase 6,625 pouches and 120 magnetic bases to lock and unlock them.

Kane County Forest Preserve District holding centennial eventThe Forest Preserve District of Kane County will hold a centennial celebration at noon Saturday, June 8, at Johnson’s Mound in Elburn, the first forest preserve established by the district. The music school’s newest franchise at 355 S. Randall Road will celebrate its grand opening from 1:30 to 5 p.m. Saturday, June 7, by offering a free music lessons and a concert by Elgin School of Rock’s 101 program students.

This summer, the Elgin area is chock-full of annual festivals, parades and other events. Here’s a rundown of things you can add to your calendar. June 1: Elgin Valley Fox Trot begins and ends just north of the Gail Borden Library at Grove Avenue and Kimball Street in downtown Elgin. The 10-mile run starts at 7:30 a.m. followed by a 5K starts at 7:40 a.m. Registration is $60 for the 10-mile and $45 for the 5K. A free post-race party, featuring music, food and beverages, is open to the public.

Buzzing bumblebee birdbaths, butterfly benches and big globes will be on display in and around Elgin this summer to promote Habitat for Humanity of Northern Fox Valley’s Carter Crossing project in Carpentersville and to raise funds to build affordable housing. The display is made up of more than 30 fiberglass sculptures decorated by area artists in the theme of “Home Planet Earth.” They were unveiled Thursday evening at The Haight in downtown Elgin.
