Yet the largest group supporting the Diocese of Rochester’s newest priest were the men who — as of that day — are now his brethren. Approximately 40 diocesan priests, along with guest clergy, filled several rows of seats near Sacred Heart Cathedral’s altar.

WEBSTER — In 1957, 16-year-old Jim Alessi joined a Legion of Mary group to enhance his commitment to spirituality and service. Some 68 years later, those same ideals continue to drive his involvement with the legion. “The purpose of the legion is first, grow in holiness; second, help the parish priest,” said Alessi, who serves as vice president of the Legion of Mary’s Rochester Comitium.
