Texas Man Faces Felony Burglary Charges in Marathon City

MARATHON CITY, WI (WSAU) — An 18-year-old from Texas is facing multiple charges after officers say he broke into at least two homes in Marathon City, threatening the occupants of one. Benjamin Sanchez is accused of barging into one home Tuesday night and threatening to kill the occupants. When the homeowner called for help, the man fled. Officers chased him down the street, where he entered another home. He was arrested outside that home without further incident.
Central Wisconsin Man Sentenced to Federal Prison on Gun Charges

MADISON, WI (WSAU) — A Stratford man will serve 11 years in federal prison for conspiracy to distribute more than 500 grams of methamphetamine and being a felon in possession of a firearm. Joshua Lake was sentenced on Wednesday, three months after he pleaded guilty to the charges in US District Court. In addition to the prison time, he will also serve five years on extended supervision. The 32-year-old sold meth to an undercover informant in February 2024.

CINCINNATI, OH (WSAU) — Jackson Chourio recorded three hits, including a 2-run home run in the 5th inning, and Quinn Priester allowed just two hits and three walks over five innings to lead Milwaukee in a 9-1 win over the Cincinnati Reds on Wednesday. Chourio finished 3-5 with two RBI and two runs scored. Rhys Hoskins, Brice Turang, and Daz Cameron each added two hits. Camron’s line included his first home run of the season, a two-run shot in the sixth inning.
Stevens Point Officially Opens RFP Process for Former Shopko Block

STEVENS POINT, WI (WSAU-WAOW) – After tearing down the old Shopko building in Stevens Point last summer, the city is ready to find its replacement. On Tuesday, officials announced a request for development proposals for part of the former Shopko parking lot. This request will stay open until a proposal is successfully negotiated. All proposal details can be found online. In May 2024, a targeted area master plan for Downtown Stevens Point was approved and recently amended.

The 44-year-old was in court this week, where his defense team announced that they have had meaningful discussions with the state about a plea deal. The parties will return to court next month, and if no such agreement is reached, the judge may schedule the matter for trial.

Aspirus Wausau Emergency Room Expansion Complete

WAUSAU, WI (WSAU-WAOW) — Aspirus Wausau Hospital has wrapped up the final phase of its emergency department expansion. The new addition opened to patients on June 3. The expansion has increased the department’s capacity to 30 treatment spaces. Eight new patient rooms, including enhanced trauma and critical care rooms, were added. The project began in 2022 in response to rising emergency volumes and the need for modernized care spaces. Initially, the department had 18 beds.
Two Injured in Marathon County House Fire

HATLEY, WI (WSAU) — Two people were injured in a Tuesday morning house fire in Hatley. The fire was reported at about 12:05 AM on Kirkwood Street. When crews arrived, they found a 67-year-old woman outside the home with burn injuries. She informed crews that another woman was trapped inside. Firefighters were able to locate the woman and extract her from the home. She was hospitalized with life-threatening injuries.
Former Wisconsin Rapids Youth Pastor Sentenced for Child Sex Crimes

WISCONSIN RAPIDS, WI (WSAU) — The former Wisconsin Rapids youth pastor convicted of repeated child sexual assault will serve 10 years in a state prison. James Lane was handed a 15-year sentence on Tuesday, including 10 years in a state prison and five years on extended supervision. He will also pay court costs and fees and will spend the rest of his life on the state sex offender registry. Lane pleaded guilty to one count of repeated sexual assault of the same child in early April.
Wisconsin DMV Reports Phishing Scam

MADISON, WI (WSAU) — The Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles is warning customers about a phishing scam. The scam involves a text message claiming a “final notice” for an unpaid traffic violation. The messages may include a link to what appears to be an official Wisconsin DMV website, but instead will take you to a malicious website. The messages are not from the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) or Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and should be ignored.
