On Kiva Williams' Juneteenth table, pops of red — barbecue ribs and watermelon, a symbol of freedom — share the table with hot dogs, burgers, potato salad and baked beans. Sometimes, foods from her past, like fried fish and spaghetti, and coleslaw, "my favorite meal from back home" in Tennessee, also make an appearance. For Williams, who runs the Fun Foodie Mama blog, the celebration is a relatively small one, and recent.

I first found tofu cream — a pourable sauce made from blended tofu, miso and garlic — in Hetty Lui McKinnon’s 2023 cookbook, “Tenderheart.” Her sauce coats a mix of chewy udon and sauteed mushrooms and leeks, creating a lip-licking pasta that’s filling without feeling heavy. In her creamy vegan tofu noodles (below), the tofu cream is punched up with five-spice powder, tossed with wheat noodles, then drizzled with soy sauce, black vinegar and my forever favorite thing, chile crisp.

By Emily Weinstein, The New York TimesShould I be embarrassed by the fact that I like Valentine’s Day? Probably? But I do. I like everything chocolate, I think flowers are charming, I have nothing against a nice glass of wine and I melt when my children present me with homemade cards scribbled with their sweet handwriting.

Total Time3½ hours (plus cooling and resting)With 5 lb. of dried fruit and multiple dosings of dark rum, this aged Jamaican Black Cake is a treat for certified fruitcake fans. Named for its deep, dark color, the cake often features a splash of browning sauce—a burnt sugar syrup commonly used in Caribbean cooking for color and flavor—in the batter. In her version, chef Millie Peartree uses molasses instead.
