Pumpkins are the staple fruit of the Fall season—synonymous with Halloween and the festivities that follow it. People love exploring pumpkin patches with their loved ones, making pie and carving faces into the rind—but you can only eat pie and seeds for so long. In reality, a pumpkin is nothing but a menial, degradable member on a small, tiny branch of the gourd family tree. These pathetic gourds bring shame to their gourd brethren.

Izaak Fazekas is an interdisciplinary transmedia artist in the BFA program at PSU. Originally from New Orleans, Fazekas relocated to Portland in 2019 in order to pursue an education in the PNW. Fazekas spoke with Portland State Vanguard to discuss his art practice and some of his recent works. Vanguard: What kind of materials and mediums do you enjoy working with? Fazekas: I paint. I draw. I do sculpture. I like sculpture a lot. I feel like it gets things across.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, Portland State students and members of organizations—including Students United for Palestinian Equal Rights (SUPER), the Resist United-States-Led War Movement and the Jewish Voice for Peace Portland—gathered in the Urban Plaza as part of a rally for the Cut Ties with Boeing campaign. Protesters held the rally to express their objection to Portland State’s ongoing partnership with the weapons manufacturer Boeing.

A new art and literary magazine is currently underway in Portland called Invisible Force. Its “biggest goal is [for] people that are disabled to be able to tell their story,” said Anna Culver—Portland Community College student, musician, artist and the magazine’s art director. Invisible Force originated as a student collaboration at PCC’s Accessible Ed & Disability Resources center.
