SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Two people who died from in a crash after the vehicle fled from a traffic stop have been identified by the South Dakota Department of Public Safety. A truck fled from the traffic stop on U.S. Highway 18 and it crashed on a curve near mile marker 73 near Oelrichs on Monday night, Feb. 24 in Fall River County. The truck driver, Kyle Daniel Cortier, 28, of Rapid City and passenger Nolan Gage Warrior Jr. 23, of Oglala, died from the crash.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — Authorities in Parker are investigating a crash that happened Monday afternoon. Parker Fire Rescue says they were dispatched to a head-on collision between a minivan and a semi, west of Parker on SD Hwy 44. According to reports, the driver of the minivan blew a tire and caused a collision with the semi-trailer. No serious injuries were reported in the crash.
March sobriety checkpoints announced

SIOUX FALLS SD (KELO) — The South Dakota Highway Patrol has announced where sobriety checkpoints will be for the month of March. Sobriety checkpoints will be held in 15 different counties. The counties are: Brookings, Clay, Codington, Custer, Edmunds, Fall River, Jackson, Jerauld, Lawrence, Lyman, Meade, Minnehaha, Pennington, Roberts, and Spink. The Department of Public Safety says the checkpoints are designed to encourage people to not drink and drive.

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — The South Dakota Office of Attorney General has released the overall number of reported criminal offenses statewide for 2024. The AG’s office says reported criminal offenses in the state increased 1.21% compared to 2023. The number of homicides jumped from 18 to 31. Here’s a look at the other numbers:31 homicides reported in 2024, up from 18 in 2023. DUI arrests were at 5,493 in 2024, up from 5,412 in 2023. Total drug offenses increased to 6,751 compared to 6,315 in 2023.

16-year-old dies from exposure to freezing temps

SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) — A 16-year-old boy was found dead from exposure to freezing weather in Tripp County. The Tripp County Sheriff’s Office says at noon Sunday, they received a call regarding an abandoned vehicle found in the yard of a home just north of the South Dakota/Nebraska border along Highway 183. Authorities say the vehicle appeared to have become stuck in tire ruts and brush. The driver of the vehicle, a 16-year-old boy, was found about 150 yards from the vehicle by family members.
