The Pan South African Language Board (PanSALB) says while progress has been made to promote multilingualism, there is still much work to be done. This as the country observes the African Language Week. Speaking at the International Mother Language Day commemoration in the City of Mbombela in Mpumalanga, PanSALB CEO, Lance Schultz has called on citizens to support all initiatives aimed at developing and preserving marginalised languages.

More households in Tekwane, southeast of the City of Mbombela, in Mpumalanga have tempered electricity meters. This was discovered by the power utility Eskom after it embarked on electricity meter audit in Tekwane. Illegal connections were immediately cut-off, transformers removed, and homeowners fined. The community was plunged into darkness, after Eskom employees removed electricity transformers. 90 of 118 households audited were found to have tempered with their meters.

Five suspects have been arrested in connection with the murder of a Mpumalanga police officer. Lieutenant-Colonel Piet Pretorius was gunned down in the line of duty in Ermelo yesterday afternoon. He was in a state vehicle when the incident happened. Provincial police spokesperson Jabu Ndubane says the vehicle that was used in the commission of the crime was found torched near Ermelo. She says the suspects were arrested in Mbombela.

Two suspects arrested in connection with the mass shooting in Pienaar Township are expected back in the KaBokweni Magistrate’s court in Mpumalanga today. One suspect appeared yesterday at the Nelspruit Magistrate’s Court in Mbombela. Speaking during a press briefing at the provincial police headquarters, the Acting Provincial Commissioner, Major-General Zeph Mkhwanazi, says the suspect appeared for allegedly being in possession of three illegal firearms.

President Cyril Ramaphosa has handed over four bridges built in the Thembisile Hani Local Municipality in KwaMhlanga, Mpumalanga. He has called on communities to play a meaningful role in protecting infrastructure. The Public Works and Infrastructure Department together with the South African National Defence Force, built the bridges under the Welisizwe Rural Bridges Programme.
