MANHATTAN BEACH, Minn. — Crosslake and the Whitefish Chain of Lakes were in the spotlight Friday, May 9, when Gov. Tim Walz kicked off Minnesota’s walleye fishing season at the 77th Governor’s Fishing Opener . After staying overnight at Manhattan Beach Lodge, Walz had a full day of media events ahead of the Saturday fishing opener , when he planned to head out at 8:15 a.m. with area fishing guide Nate Blasing.

A couple weeks ago, former Lake Country Echo Editor Peter Frank contacted me to ask if I could find photos he took of the 2001 Governor's Fishing Opener when then-Gov. Jesse Ventura came to Breezy Point and Pequot Lakes. I went to our bound books containing hard copies of every newspaper published and found what he was looking for. I took photos of the photos and emailed them to Frank.

Lake Shore City Council awards bid for two road projects

LAKE SHORE — The bid for 2025 road improvement projects in Lake Shore was awarded to Ideal Construction, Inc., of Staples for $404,931 at the council's regular meeting Monday, April 28. The city received three bids, and approved the lowest. Roads to be improved are Gullwood Road and Timber Lane. The police department listed 67 incidents in March, including 46 traffic-related incidents and 21 miscellaneous calls.

LAKE SHORE — As expected, a third longtime Lake Shore city employee will leave her position after working for almost 26 years for the city. After 34 years in the public sector, I have made the decision to lessen my workload to travel and spend more time with my family. Teri Hastings Teri Hastings, city administrator/planning and zoning administrator, will resign effective June 4. The council accepted her resignation at the regular meeting Monday, April 28.
Rural Pine River couple shares their story of AA, Al-Anon

NISSWA — In part thanks to two support groups that are more plentiful in the lakes area than many may realize, a Pine River area couple will celebrate their 40th wedding anniversary in June. Dave and Natalie found help each needed through Alcoholics Anonymous and Al-Anon. They recently shared their story during Alcohol Awareness Month in April as a way to possibly help others.
Brainerd lakes area priest describes being in Rome after pope's death

When Father Tony Wroblewski woke up the day after Easter Sunday to his cellphone pinging with text messages, he wondered what was going on. Afterall, he had a flight to catch to Rome with his good friends, Kelly and Mary Conger, of rural Pine River. "When we woke up, of course, we heard the news that the pope had died, which was going to change everything in Rome," Wroblewski said Friday, April 25, from Poland, where he and the Congers traveled after spending a few historical days in Rome.
