A couple weeks ago, former Lake Country Echo Editor Peter Frank contacted me to ask if I could find photos he took of the 2001 Governor's Fishing Opener when then-Gov. Jesse Ventura came to Breezy Point and Pequot Lakes. I went to our bound books containing hard copies of every newspaper published and found what he was looking for. I took photos of the photos and emailed them to Frank.

When Gov. Tim Walz arrives in Crosslake this week, it'll mark the eighth time a governor has come to the lakes area for the annual Governor's Fishing Opener. And it will be the first time the event is on the Whitefish Chain of Lakes. The walleye and northern pike opener is Saturday, May 10. The last time a Minnesota governor ventured to the lakes area for the annual event was 2014, when Nisswa and Grand View Lodge on Gull Lake hosted Gov. Mark Dayton.
