Two people, including an 18-year-old, were hospitalized Sunday after a two-vehicle crash in rural Cortland Township, authorities said. Deputies from the DeKalb County Sheriff’s Office were called to the corner of Illinois State Route 64 and East County Line Road around 3:23 p.m. Sunday for reports of a collision, according to a news release from the sheriff’s office.

DeKALB – A DeKalb Wendy’s fast food restaurant has been deemed uninhabitable after a weekend fire, according to a city ruling posted on the eatery’s windows. A sign posted on multiple places around the Wendy’s announced the building is undergoing maintenance until Monday. As of Sunday night, the DeKalb Fire Department hasn’t yet publicly released more details on the Saturday fire at the Wendy’s, 1321 Sycamore Road, near Hopkins Park and across the street from Jewel-Osco grocer.

BYRON – Like many wrestlers, Princeton sophomore Augustus Swanson had come up with a game plan heading into his 106-pound championship match against Johnsburg’s Eric Bush at Saturday’s Class 1A Byron Sectional. “I hadn’t wrestled him before, but I watched his semifinal and expected him to be on the attack right from the start,” Swanson said. “That’s kind of my thing too, so I just wanted to make sure I made my shots count and finished them.

A big yellow sign that reads “retirement sale” outside Nelson’s Jewelry in Crystal Lake can clearly be seen from Route 14. The sale marks a new beginning for the 61-year-old business as it transferred ownership outside the Nelson family for the first time ever. Nelson’s Jewelry opened in 1962 by husband and wife Art and Alice Nelson. After they retired in the late 1980s, sons Robert and Richard Nelson took over.

DeKALB – DeKalb School District 428 is looking to lock down its top education official for at least two more years. The school board voted 4-1 this week to extend Superintendent Minerva Garcia-Sanchez’s contract through June 30, 2026. The only dissenting vote was cast by Vice President Steven Byers, and board members Amanda Harness and Andre Powell were absent. In a statement, Garcia-Sanchez expressed appreciation to the school board for extending her contract.

Learn the basics of vegetable, herb and flower gardening. Marshall-Putnam 4-H along with Marshall-Putnam Master Gardeners are offering the Learn-Grow-Share SPIN (special interest) club to all youth ages 8 to 18. The club will meet from 6 to 7:30 p.m. beginning Feb. 29 at the Marshall-Putnam Extension office, 509 Front St., Henry. Sessions will be one to two times per month depending on the weather and task for that month.

Newman 57, Fulton 28: At Sterling, the Comets opened the postseason with a win in a Class 1A West Carroll Regional quarterfinal. Helen Papoccia led Newman with 14 points.
