WEYMOUTH Thirds suffered a 25-run defeat as an experienced Shillingstone Seconds won their County Division Seven West encounter. Robin Cunningham’s fine 85 and a late unbeaten blitz of 28 by skipper Jerry Shaw helped Shillingstone to 189-7 from their 40 overs. The hosts did not have it all their own way, as young Luke Williams (2-13) and debutant Ismail Mohammed (2-26) both claimed a brace. Will Voaden (27) and Nat Thorne (24) also contributed in what was a good contest between bat and ball.

WEYMOUTH suffered their first County Division One loss since the opening day after a brutal seven-wicket reverse to Corfe Mullen. Winning the toss and batting first on a good Redlands pitch, the Seasiders lacked any sort of fluency or application with the willow as Corfe’s slow bowlers dismantled their line-up. After Tommy Stannard (2-31) tempted openers Lloyd Beals (4) and Tom England (2) into loose shots, Neil Walton (25) and Kieron Womble (18) rebuilt to 45-2.

Two bowling points earned at Poole Town, before torrential rain curtailed the Seasiders’ clash, propelled them one point above second-placed Royal Challengers. Whyte’s men therefore go into today’s home match against old rivals Corfe Mullen (1pm) with targets on their back, but the Australian is braced for the challenge. He said: “I’m looking forward to the match this week. Last week was one of those with the weather but we managed to move to top spot.

Cube Whyte’s men are sitting second, one point behind leaders Royal Challengers after wins over the table-toppers, Wimborne Seconds, Witchampton and Broadstone Seconds. All four victories have featured emphatic performances with either bat, ball or both, culminating in skittling Broadstone for 78 during a nine-wicket win last weekend. And with the Seasiders improving each week, Whyte is keen for his players to maintain a top level of performance.

Having beaten leaders Royal Challengers, Wimborne Seconds and Witchampton in a tough opening cluster of fixtures, the Seasiders now tackle another of the two promoted sides. And skipper Cube Whyte is keen to extend second-placed Weymouth’s winning streak, with his men in touching distance of top spot. He told the Echo: “We’re looking to keep the momentum up after three wins on the bounce.
