An assistant boys lacrosse coach at Valley Stream Central High School has been arrested and charged with the alleged "sextortion" of a 13-year-old boy, whom he allegedly enticed to produce and send sexually explicit images via Snapchat — one of at least 30 alleged victims of the defendant, federal prosecutors said in newly unsealed court papers. Joseph Garofalo, 20, of Valley Stream, pleaded not guilty last month to the charge of sexual exploitation of children.

An MS-13 gang member from Central Islip was sentenced Wednesday to 55 years in federal prison for his in planning and executing the 2017 hacking killings of four young men in a Central Islip park. U.S. District Judge Gary R. Brown sentenced Omar Antonio Villalta, 29, who is also known as "Anticristo" at the federal courthouse in Central Islip — not far from where victims Jorge Tigre, 18; Michael Lopez Banegas, 20; Jefferson Villalobos, 18 and Justin Llivicura, 16, were killed on April 11, 2017.

The sentencing of the campaign treasurer for ex-Long Island Rep. George Santos, who pleaded guilty to helping Santos file fraudulent campaign finance reports, has been postponed again. Nancy Marks, a veteran of Republican political campaigns on Long Island, was to be sentenced Thursday, but "due to a conflict in the Court's calendar," it has been rescheduled to May 28, according to a court filing.

The Nassau County Police Department spent about $80 million on overtime last year, exceeding its overtime budget by 64%, preliminary figures obtained by Newsday show. The county budget for 2024 allocated more than $48 million for police overtime, but the department spent an additional $31 million last year, the figures from the Office of Legislative Budget Review show.
