    PAWLEYS ISLAND — A Hammock Coast beach just netted a statewide honor for the second year in a row. Pawleys Island, one of the country's oldest seaside resorts, has been named “Best Beach in South Carolina” by the USA Today/10 Best Readers’ Choice Awards. It first won in 2024. Three Georgetown County destinations — Huntington Beach State Park, Litchfield Beach and Pawleys Island — were among the beaches in the contest. Huntington (No. 4) and Litchfield (No. 3) also placed in the Top 5 again.

    NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — Three victims remain hospitalized after a Memorial Day weekend boat cruise ended in a mass shooting in Little River, according to Horry County Police. Ten people suffered gunshot wounds while another had an injury unrelated to the gunfire in the May 25 episode, police said. There were no deaths in the shooting. Eight of the victims have been released from area hospitals, and the three others are in stable condition, Horry County Police Chief Kris Leonhardt said.

    MYRTLE BEACH — Contender's visits tend to make headlines. Weighing 1,653 pounds and extending some 13 feet, the great white shark was spotted nearly 100 miles off the coast of Myrtle Beach last weekend, according to Ocearch, a shark research organization that tracks a shark's location whenever it briefly comes up to the surface. This marked the second time in recent weeks that a great white was seen close to the Grand Strand.

    NORTH MYRTLE BEACH — A disability rights nonprofit has partnered with North Myrtle Beach to make navigating the beach a little easier for wheelchair-bound visitors. City officials and the Adaptive Surf Project, which seeks to provide beach wheelchairs at every East Coast pier, on May 21 unveiled a new handicap-accessible beach access. The site is meant to help people with mobility issues better traverse the sand.
