LORIS — Pulling in to 5 Star Farm just before 11 p.m. Friday, Robert Slate grew worried when he saw his garage door open and the farm's Gator utility vehicle still parked and loaded with animal feed. Normally, his older brother Eric would have finished caring for their menagerie of camels, llamas and other animals hours earlier. Then he spotted Eric Slate lying inside the kangaroo enclosure. The 52-year-old wasn't moving. "It's been tragic," Robert Slate, the farm's owner, said.

MYRTLE BEACH — Most of the land scorched by the Carolina Forest wildfire was bought by Horry County in 2018 as part of a plan to reduce the risk of a major fire disaster by using prescribed burns. These planned fires eliminate the overgrowth that can choke out rare plants and fuel wildfires, but the county never burned on its property before the March 1 blaze began. The fire, which is 90 percent contained though still smoldering, ultimately spread to 2,059 acres, officials said.
