Groundbreaking for housing project in historic Main Street Worcester building

The Menkiti Group, along with local and state leaders, took part in a groundbreaking ceremony Tuesday at 204 Main Street in Worcester. The 100 year old Kane Building, which housed Olympic Sporting Goods for decades, is being redeveloped for housing and retail use. The Healey-Driscoll administration contributed $2.5 million in housing development incentive program tax credits for the project. The building will be renamed the Olympic Lofts.

MassDOT warns drivers of major delays expected on the Mass Pike this weekend

NEWTON, Mass. - Closures on the Mass Pike this weekend are expected to lead to major delays. The Massachusetts Department of Transportation said all but one lane in each direction will be closed near Interstate 95 in the Newton/Weston area from nine o'clock Friday night until Monday morning. It's part of their bridge replacement project. The bridge crosses over MBTA commuter rail tracks, which will also be shut down during the construction.

GRAFTON, Mass. - The U.S. Department of Labor is pausing operations at job corps centers across the country. The Grafton Job Corps Center is one of more than 120 in the U.S.It provides nearly 200 students between the ages of 16 and 24 with free career training. Jeannie Hebert is the President and CEO of the Blackstone Valley Chamber of Commerce and serves on the job corps community development board. The chamber serves as a hub for the corps advanced manufacturing classes.

WORCESTER, Mass. - We're hearing from the president of the Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce about the state's Board of Elementary and Secondary Education's vote to use a weighted lottery system to admit students into vocational schools. President and CEO Tim Murray said the decision will water down admissions standards, limit voc-tech access for students and undermine the pipeline of skilled workers. He said a student's future shouldn't be determined by an unproven lottery system.

EASTHAMPTON, Mass. - Western Massachusetts city leaders recognize the importance of mental health. The City of Easthampton, in partnership with MiraVista Behavioral Health Center, held a flag raising outside of city hall Tuesday morning. MiraVista said the flag will serve as a visual symbol of hope and a commitment to fostering awareness, compassion and access to care. MiraVista provides inpatient psychiatric care for adolescents and adults, and outpatient treatment for substance use recovery.
Immigration attorney explains two types of warrants ICE uses for arrests

WORCESTER, Mass. - Immigration attorney Randy Feldman said people coming out to show their support for someone being picked up by ICE is a good thing like they did during the incident in Worcester Thursday on Eureka Street… but he said obstructing justice, is not. He said people should follow the rules of the law, especially with so many unknowns. Feldman said it's unclear whether Thursday’s incident obstructed justice and said with the facts he knows so far, this was a legal arrest.

ROME, Italy. - Two Worcester college students were among the many people in attendance at the Vatican when the new pope was announced. Maryja Prytko and Savina Villani are students at Assumption University. They're studying abroad in Rome this semester. The two were at St. Peter's Square when the white smoke first billowed from the chimney announcing the new pope and stayed to hear his first address.
