Clare Fine Gael TD Joe Cooney has questioned the Department of Transport about the level of funding allocated to County Clare in its €60 million Capital Investment Programme for national secondary roads across Ireland. Deputy Cooney has written to Minister Darragh O’Brien and Minister of State Sean Canney to express his disappointment at the department’s decision to allocate just €408,000 to County Clare, which he said was one of the lowest per kilometre capital allocations in the country.

Clare Civil Defence personnel were requested to assist Gardaí with searches in Limerick City as part of an ongoing missing persons investigation. Searches were carried out on Wednesday along the banks of the River Shannon as well as in wetlands off the Condell Road. A Garda spokeswoman confirmed: “Gardaí carrying out searches in Limerick City as part of an ongoing missing persons investigation.”The spokeswoman added that there was “no further information” to add at this time.

Two people were towed to safety after their cruiser lost engine power and was left adrift of the Clare shore on Lough Derg this afternoon. The Lough Derg RNLI lifeboat was tasked to assist the pair after their 18ft vessel suffered engine failure by Hare Island on the Clare side of the lake. The Dromineer-based volunteer lifeboat crew was tasked by watch officers at the Irish Coast Guard’s marine rescue coordination centre on Valentia Island in Kerry.

Ahead of the Easter weekend, the Irish Coast Guard, RNLI and Water Safety Ireland are appealing for people to stay safe when they visit the coast or plan an activity, on or near the water. Easter is traditionally the time when many sailors and motorboat users take their craft out of storage and begin their season. Water temperatures at this time of year are still relatively cold and water users should always be aware of the risk of cold water shock, when entering the water.
