PORT ARTHUR — The public is invited to participate in the Juneteenth flag-raising ceremony, scheduled for June 12th. Members of the City of Port Arthur, the Port Arthur Public Library, and the African American Cultural Society are organizing the event, recognizing Juneteenth as the day slavery finally ended in the United States. June 19, 1865, is when the last group of enslaved people was told of their liberation in Texas, two and a half years after the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation.
