Councillors in Castlebar Municipal District have criticised the slow delivery of social housing. A derelict property in the middle of a “model” Mayo village is holding back further development according to the local Community Council. The Belcarra Community Council made a presentation to members of the Castlebar Municipal District at last week’s area meeting calling for support for the village’s annual 8K run through GMA funding, for assistance with public realm improvements and to help deal with a derelict site in the centre of the village.

The HSE has acknowledged there are still challenges in providing adequate levels of home help to all those who need it in Mayo. A spokesperson for HSE West and North West said home support is provided to a total of 1,581 clients in Mayo with a further 242 on waiting lists. Its National Service Plan targets 24 million hours of home support nationally, of which around 4.3 million are for the West and North West region, and Mayo has been allocated extra funding for a further 617,592 hours.
