Members of Mayo County Council’s Roads and Sustainable Travel Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) have called for the local authority to adopt its own speed limit by-laws ahead of the outcome of a national review. Fine Gael Cllr Jarlath Munnelly made the proposal at last week’s meeting of the SPC, held at the TF Royal Hotel in Castlebar.

The tight-knit community of Lisaniskea, Belcarra and the wider village said goodbye to one of its most upstanding members last week following the passing of Chrissie Galvin (nee Walsh). A wonderful neighbour and foremost, a wonderful friend, Chrissie was the heart and soul of Lisaniskea. We received the sad news of her passing, after a battle with illness, last Thursday evening and it leaves us without one of the most treasured members of the community.

A former smuggling ship, which was sunk into Killala Bay last September as part of a tourism project, has broken up into three pieces. The MV Shingle was sunk into the waters about four kilometres out from Enniscrone as part of a joint effort between Killala Bay Ships 2 Reef (KBS2R), the Revenue Commission and Mayo and Sligo County Councils to become Ireland’s first artificial reef and a diving hotspot. The sinking of the ship attracted considerable media attention.

A local councillor has said there is not much of a future in electric vehicles (EVs) unless there is a trade-in market for them. Independent Cllr Richard Finn told last week’s meeting of Mayo Co Council's Roads and Sustainable Travel Strategic Policy Committee (SPC) that while he supports EVs and other environmental measures, he feels there are obstacles preventing people from committing to EVs.“Until such a time that people can get a trade-in for their EV, I don’t see much of a long-term future.

A local councillor has called on Minister for Social Protection, Rural and Community Development Dara Calleary to "cement his legacy in Ballina" by constructing a new vehicular bridge across the River Moy. Fine Gael Cllr John O’Hara brought a notice of motion to last week’s Ballina Municipal District meeting in which he proposed that the best way to end the constant traffic delays in the North Mayo capital was to construct a new bridge across the River.
