The new Cathoirleach of Ballina Municipal District has criticised the election process in Mayo which led to the ‘neglected’ north Mayo area being the last area to be counted in the country. Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Loftus stated this afternoon after he was elected chair that he had a problem with the count and he suggested a deputy returning officer should be appointed. “It is something that they may have to be addressed in Castlebar (at the next meeting of Mayo County Council).

A west of Ireland hotel has rejected allegations that a "non registered" tradesman carried out work at the hotel ahead of the arrival of up to 120 asylum seekers. The Department of Integration and Safe Electric are understood to be carrying out their own separate investigations into the allegations surrounding the complaints made in relation to the Twin Trees Hotel in Ballina, county Mayo.

Offaly boxer Paul ‘The Boxer’ Loonam, made an impressive start to his professional career with a dominant unanimous points debut win against Romanian opponent Stefan Nicolae. Loonam started impressively with a massive punch to Nicolae’s head that visibly rattled him and his speed and technical ability was far superior throughout. A good flurry of body shots from the ‘The Boxer’ who landed multiple times in the opening minutes set the tone, while Nicolae frequently missed with a lot of wild shots.

Clare man David ‘The Machine’ Ryan won the BUI light welterweight Celtic title fight on points after he defeated Tony McGlynn in a pulsating encounter that ended in controversy. Both fighters started with huge intensity and ferocity in the early exchanges at the Warehouse with the Dubliner landing the most eye-catching shots in round one. Ryan and McGlynn exchanged big right hand shots during a frantic opening three minutes.
