New Ballina Cathaoirleach criticises length of local election count

The new Cathoirleach of Ballina Municipal District has criticised the election process in Mayo which led to the ‘neglected’ north Mayo area being the last area to be counted in the country. Fianna Fáil councillor Michael Loftus stated this afternoon after he was elected chair that he had a problem with the count and he suggested a deputy returning officer should be appointed. “It is something that they may have to be addressed in Castlebar (at the next meeting of Mayo County Council).

A west of Ireland hotel has rejected allegations that a "non registered" tradesman carried out work at the hotel ahead of the arrival of up to 120 asylum seekers. The Department of Integration and Safe Electric are understood to be carrying out their own separate investigations into the allegations surrounding the complaints made in relation to the Twin Trees Hotel in Ballina, county Mayo.

A Mayo-based TV production company has won a prestigious Royal Television Society Ireland Award for its three-part documentary series . 'Crossing the Line’ is a leading Irish and international small natural history and wildlife film production company, run by John Murray and his wife Cepa, a Sligo native. It won ‘Best Specialist Factual’ for at the RTSI Awards, which are now Ireland’s top TV awards replacing the IFTAs."We are absolutely delighted to have won," John said.

Ireland West Airport Knock is celebrating record passenger numbers for the first quarter of this year. The January to March period has proven to be the busiest on record at Ireland West Airport, as 159,000 passengers travelled through the airport. The passenger numbers represented an 18% increase on 2023 passenger numbers and a 6% increase on the previous busiest first quarter, which occurred in 2019, when 143,000 passengers travelled through the airport.

Members of Charlestown Men’s Shed are seeking a new home and have written to the Mayo Sligo Leitrim Education and Training Board (MSLETB) for permission to use the local Enterprise Centre. The Charlestown Men’s Shed, which was established in 2016, currently has 12 members and is based in a room at the back of the CBD Complex.
