Back in 1966, Alfred Peet opened his very first coffee shop in Berkeley, CA—but not without doing his research first. Before the doors opened for the first time, Peet studied the coffee industry in Holland, where he grew up, and where his father ran a coffee and tea business. He also visited Indonesia, where he sampled traditional dark-roasted coffee. This experience inspired him to create a new coffee shop in California that served top-quality dark-roasted beans—and customers loved it.
