BELLPORT, NY — Bellport High School’s sprint medley relay team brought home a first-place trophy from the Glenn D. Loucks Games, school district officials said. The team, comprised of Desmond Escobar, Raymond Kreamer, Vincent Pitre, and John Uyi, ran the race in 3:31.94, making them the second-fastest sprint medley relay team in the state, and the holders of the eighth-fastest time in Glenn D. Loucks Games history. The win secured them a spot at the nationals.

YAPHANK, NY — There's a new sheriff in town. The Suffolk County Sheriff’s office’s newest corrections officer, K9 "Sato," was given his badge in a special ceremony on Wednesday at the Yaphank Correctional Facility. Sato, a two-year-old German Shepherd, that is trained in narcotics detection, is assigned to both of the county's correctional facilities, in Yaphank and Riverhead, respectively, "where he plays a critical role in maintaining safety and security," Sheriff Errol Toulon.

NORTH BELLPORT, NY — Traffic was backed up along westbound Sunrise Highway for the morning commute on Thursday due to a two-car crash, Suffolk police said. The left lane on the westbound side of the highway, just west of Exit 57, was closed as of 7:19 a.m. while officers awaited a tow truck, according to police. LONG ISLAND, NY — After a four-week trial, a federal jury convicted a Bloods gang leader from Long Island on 22 counts of a second superseding indictment charging him with narcotics distribution, including instances that led to three non-fatal overdoses, as well as a firearms-related crime, the U.S. Attorney's office said Wednesday. When sentenced, Gary Johnson, 41, of Bellport, faces a mandatory minimum sentence of 20 years in prison and up to life in prison, according to prosecutors.
