LONG ISLAND, NY — A school community on Long Island is mourning the loss of a student, who was hospitalized last weekend and died Wednesday night, according to posts on social media. In a post to Facebook on Thursday morning, Longwood Central School District Schools Superintendent Lance Lohman announced "the heartbreaking news" that a student, who was in critical care, died on Wednesday night.

STONY BROOK, NY — Eleven Stony Brook University students had their visas revoked between March 28 and Thursday, university officials said. As of Wednesday, 21 students had a change of visa status across State University of New York campuses, but officials are unable to comment on individual students’ change in status, a SUNY spokeswoman said Friday morning.

He is expected to appear before a judge on Friday for the first time since he was charged in the attack, the outlet reported. The boy's name is being withheld due to his status as a minor. His defense attorney, Peter Mayer of Hauppauge, previously told Newsday the boy is a "child" and that similar to all defendants he has the presumption of innocence. Patch has reached out to Mayer.

BROOKHAVEN TOWN, NY — Five people were hurt in two separate crashes within 20 minutes of each other in Brookhaven Town on Thursday night Mastic, Suffolk police said. In the first crash, a man driving a 1996 Toyota sedan with an adult passenger was traveling southbound on Mastic Road in Mastic at around 7:20 p.m., when the vehicle collided with a northbound 2007 Dodge Suburban turning left onto Somerset Avenue, according to police.

MEDFORD, NY — A brush fire spread from the backyard of one Medford home to another, drawing area firefighters on Thursday, Suffolk police said. A 911 caller reported hearing two loud bangs, possibly a transformer, and then seeing smoke coming from a location on Sipp Avenue just after 4 p.m. on Thursday, according to police.
