Ten months ago, catastrophic flooding devastated areas on the east end of Long Island. August storms brought historic rainfall to Stony Brook, where floodwaters destroyed a century-old dam that supports Harbor Road and Grist Mill Pond. As the anniversary of the destruction nears, locals are frustrated that the work has not been done yet to repair the damage. That anger brought hundreds of residents out to the site on Saturday to protest the inaction and hopefully bring about some progress.

A popular summertime spot on Long Island is not allowing anyone on the shore after police were called about scores of students potentially heading there as part of an unofficial skip day at schools nearby and in New York City. Long Beach police drove up and down the boardwalk after the city announced the beach was closed to the public on Friday.

Authorities are investigating after one person was pulled alive and another pulled dead from a garbage truck when it stopped at a middle school on Long Island Thursday, according to officials. Police in Suffolk County say the circumstances are under investigation. At this point, it appears the men were in a dumpster at a shopping center on Veterans Memorial Highway when the container was emptied into the truck.
