The City of Rockingham has written to the state government requesting temporary closure of Penguin Island to visitors to address the decline in penguin numbers. According to City of Rockingham Mayor Deb Hamblin, the suggestion was made by a ratepayer. But a tourist operator says the penguin population is dwindling due to climate change, and banning people from the island would do little to help boost numbers.

The parkland is to be located on an A-class reserve near WA's new $34 million children's hospice in Swanbourne, which is due to open later this year. The City of Nedlands is opposing the project, saying control over the A-class reserve should not be taken from the community. Stephen Ingram died last Sunday during a solo hiking expedition in the Swiss Alps. His family say his passion for adventure and the outdoors was admirable. His family are planning to fly his body back to Perth where a memorial service will be held. Western Australia's oldest surviving World War II army prisoner of war, Arthur Leggett, has died in Perth aged 106. Mr Leggett fought against the Italian army in Libya in the battles of Bardia and Tobruk. He was captured by Germans during the battle of Crete in 1941, when he was 22 years old, and spent four years in a prisoner of war camp. Mr Leggett was made to work in coal mines in Poland and endured a forced march across the Czech Alps while starving in the midst of European winter. Loading...
