    BLOOMINGTON — A No. 5 seed in its 11-team sub-sectional, the Lexington High School baseball team turned the number five into a huge positive Monday at Jack Horenberger Field. The Minutemen pushed across five first-inning runs and made it stand up for a 5-3 victory over Salt Fork in the Class 1A Illinois Wesleyan Super-Sectional.

    CHARLESTON — Central Catholic High School's Isaiah Whitaker had already wrapped up his third straight state championship in the Class 1A pole vault, but he wasn't celebrating yet. Eyeing the all-time Illinois record, the Saints' junior cleared 17 feet, 6½ inches on his third try to end on an even higher note Saturday at O'Brien Field. "It just felt great getting over that bar finally and being able to say I have the record," Whitaker said.

    Three Pantagraph area Class 1A-2A teams have advanced to the super-sectional round, while two 3A-4A teams are regional champions heading to sectional play. Here's a look at the softball and baseball teams still alive and how they stayed that way. Class 1AIn baseball, Lexington defeated Heyworth in the title game of the Peru St. Bede Sectional 11-5. Heyworth, which bowed out at 24-15, led 4-2 after five innings, but the Minutemen pushed across three sixth-inning runs and six more in the seventh.
