As flames ravage the Canadian north, five hotels in Niagara Falls are providing refuge to about 2,400 wildfire evacuees from the Prairies. “Everything is running smoothly,” said the city’s fire chief, Jo Zambito, who’s also the municipality’s community emergency management co-ordinator. “Everybody seems to be in as positive spirits as they can be,” he said Wednesday.

Say no to panhandling. Instead, support local charities such as Project Share and Niagara Falls Soup Kitchen. That’s the message City of Niagara Falls wants to send by installing signs at the Dorchester Road and Morrison Street intersection as part of a pilot project that could expand to other busy areas across the municipality. “It’s dangerous for the panhandler. It’s dangerous for vehicles. Somebody is going to get killed,” said Mayor Jim Diodati.

A less “onerous” commercial parking lot bylaw will hopefully lead to more buy-in from private owners who mostly have been failing to pay for operating licences, say Niagara Falls city officials. City council last week approved an amendment to a bylaw requiring parking lot owners obtain licences to operate and adhere to certain requirements. The municipality identified 43 lots throughout the city — and only three were licensed.
