A teen boy died after being hit by a train while crossing the train tracks at Merrifield Avenue and Fourth Street in Mishawaka. The Mishawaka Police Department responded to the incident around 3:30 p.m. Wednesday, May 21, telling The Tribune that 16-year-old Victor Smith-Moreland, a sophomore at Mishawaka High School, was walking home after school when he stepped in front of the train to cross over the tracks and was hit. He died instantly, the department confirmed.

Overall Indiana saw about $2.9 billion in aid packages sent from the federal government to help schools return to in-person learning and catch students up post-pandemic.
