St. Joseph County Council will vote on funding for a proposed park on Anderson and Beech roads. A local group, Friends of Granger Paths, is working on plans for a trail connecting the park to existing trails. Four peregrine falcon chicks hatched in a nest atop the South Bend County-City Building. The male chick was named Oscar, while the three female chicks were named after Indiana Fever players. Bird experts from the Indiana Department of Natural Resources banded the chicks and confirmed their health. SOUTH BEND — A guy named Oscar and three players of the Indiana Fever women’s professional basketball team are living on top of the County-City Building. Really.

Whitewater rafting returns to downtown South Bend for the summer as the East Race Waterway opens its season on June 7. You’ll first check out all of the gear you’ll need — helmet, life vest and inflatable raft with paddles — and then paddle and bob through this concrete channel that splits off of the St. Joe River. Lifeguards will be posted along the route. But expect to get wet, as we reported in this week's Outdoor Adventures.

The Mishawaka Res has undergone several improvements, including a new pedestrian bridge built by the U.S. Marine Corps reservists. A new stage is being constructed for concerts, weddings, and educational programs. Efforts to remove invasive plant species are ongoing, with volunteers and local groups contributing to the work. The Mishawaka Res is a wooded refuge for anyone who is weary of the city.
