The St. Joseph County Prosecutor's office ruled a shooting death at a South Bend gas station in May a justified shooting. The prosecutor's office determined not to file criminal charges after a man, identified as Jerry Barnette, 56, of South Bend, died from injuries in a shooting, police said. Through an investigation by the department's Violent Crimes Unit, South Bend Police said two people involved in a May 21 shooting were found.

A man, believed to have suffered a medical episode while driving, died in a single-vehicle crash Tuesday, police reported. The South Bend Police Department responded to the crash around 12:30 p.m. June 17 in the 3300 block of Portage Road, finding a vehicle that hit a pole head on, the department said. The driver, described as a man in his 80s, appeared to have had a medical episode before going off the road, police said.

The St. Joseph County Police Department was told by at least five people that a caller, impersonating Officer Steven Metcalfe, instructed people to deliver $8,000 to the department's Civil Division to avoid legal trouble, police said June 13.
