A small white Maltese found struggling to stay afloat in the East River six weeks ago has a new owner — one of the NYPD Harbor Unit cops who plucked him from the water. Police Officer Jared Desalvo opened his home to the small dog, now named Hudson, after picking up the adorable pooch at the Animal Care Centers of NYC’s Queens shelter Saturday. “I think it’s a great opportunity to give her a second chance,” Desalvo, a 10-year NYPD veteran, said about his new best friend.

Nearly 50 maltreated Belgian Malinois dogs were found trapped together in a cramped, filthy Queens apartment, sparking an animal cruelty investigation, officials said Saturday. So many dogs were stuffed into the small Woodside home Thursday morning that some were found cowering in closets and kitchen cupboards, said officials from Animal Care Centers of NYC, who rescued the animals with the ASPCA.

The city is planning to put panic buttons linked to the NYPD in about 500 bodegas across the five boroughs, the mayor and police commissioner announced Sunday. Mayor Adams and NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the city will allocate $1.6 million through an emergency grant to the United Bodega Association, as part of the city budget, to equip the bodegas with “SilentShields” buttons that would link cameras in the food stores to the NYPD in real time.

The Bronx mom suffering from mental illness found dead alongside her special needs 8-year-old son had just started taking care of the boy again after his return from a rehabilitation facility, a family friend told the Daily News. Lisa Cotton, 38, and her 8-year-old son, Nazir Millien, died in their Wakefield apartment, leaving Cotton’s traumatized 4-year-old daughter alone in the home with the two corpses for days.
