Premier Jacinta Allan's government has been under immense pressure to reform the laws amid rising crime rates and a spate of repeat offenders terrorising homes armed with weapons, including machetes.

    The Victorian government will ban machetes across the state as part of a package of law changes aimed at stamping out serious offending, the ABC understands. The new laws — to be announced tomorrow morning by Premier Jacinta Allan — will target serious offending, including home invasion and carjacking. Ms Allan and her government have been under pressure both politically and from the community to address such crimes.

Former Kooyong MP Petro Georgiou has died. His family say he died peacefully on Thursday evening. “Petro was an inspirational figure in our lives, and a giant across the Australian community.” The Liberal MP entered parliament in 1994, and retired at the 2010 and election.
