The head of the New Jersey Department of Education is pushing back on the Trump administration's pressure to axe diversity, equity, and inclusion initiatives. New Jersey Education Commissioner Kevin Dehmer said the state would not certify that it was following antidiscrimination laws. Instead, Dehmer sent a letter to the U.S. Department of Education that was released late Thursday afternoon. It was a response to a demand earlier this month to follow the Trump administration's policies.

The New Jersey Turnpike Authority is not reversing course on a contract with a company that some lawmakers have said may have ties to China. On Tuesday, the NJTA released its final decision upholding the $1.7 billion contract awarded to TransCore. The firm will handle New Jersey E-ZPass services for the Turnpike. The review was the result of a protest filed by Conduent, which had a bid that was $251 million less expensive than TransCore's.

Freed NJ convicted killer is no victim

Early on the morning of Sept. 4, 2010, Paige Pfefferle stabbed her 21-year-old boyfriend to death in the kitchen of her family's Audubon Park home. Pfefferle was convicted of first-degree murder and other crimes. She rejected two plea deal offers from prosecutors before heading to trial. She was sentenced to 30 years in prison with no eligibility for parole. State prison records showed she wasn't supposed to get out until Sept. 21, 2043.
Drunk driving is killing NJ residents — MADD and Uber team up

Mothers Against Drunk Driving and Uber are partnering this April to encourage New Jersey residents to get a ride home instead of drinking and driving. Of the 685 fatal crashes on New Jersey roads in 2022, impaired driving was responsible for 177 — or 26% — of them, according to the National Highway Transportation Safety Administration. Uber has agreed to match donations to MADD throughout April up to $25,000, doubling every contribution's impact. April is Alcohol Awareness Month.
Teen boy from New Jersey shot to death by Israeli troops

Officials have confirmed a Palestinian-American teenager from Bergen County was shot to death by Israel Defense Forces troops in the West Bank. Amer Rabee, 14, formerly of Saddle Brook, and two 15-year-old Palestinian teens were shot on Sunday, NorthJersey.com reported. The other two teenagers survived. Light sentence for NJ nurse in death of disabled student

EAST HANOVER — A former nurse has lost his nursing license but will spend no time in prison after pleading guilty after admitting to negligence in the death of a non-verbal disabled Morris County man. Emilio Rivera, 30, of Carlstadt was sentenced on Friday in Superior County in Morris County, according to the Morris County Prosecutor's Office. Rivera pleaded guilty to third-degree endangerment and third-degree neglect of a disabled person in February.
