    With the threat of severe weather looming over Southeast Texas this weekend, the National Weather Service has placed several counties in the Brazos River Valley under a tornado watch until 9 p.m. Friday. A tornado watch is issued by the Storm Prediction Center for counties where tornadoes may occur. The weather service recommends that residents in the watch area should review emergency plans, take inventory of your supplies and check your safe room.

    Citing the scores of deaths and widespread devastation cause by three hurricanes in 2024, the world body in charge of the names of tropical storms has retired Beryl, Milton and Helene from the list of names used in the Atlantic Basin. Beryl, a hurricane that made landfall in Texas on July 8, 2024, was the second name on the alphabetical list of storm names created by the World Meteorological Organization for the 2024 hurricane season.

    Parts of Southeast Texas northeast of Houston are under a tornado watch and a flood advisory Friday until 7 p.m., the National Weather Service said. Doppler weather radar at 12:30 p.m. was showing a cluster of strong to severe thunderstorms moving north, just west of the Sabine River, parallel with the Texas-Louisiana border. The tornado watch applies to Liberty and Polk counties, which include the communities of Cleveland, Corrigan, Dayton, Liberty and Livingston.
