For anyone who has spent a winter in northeastern South Dakota, the term “Wind Chill Warning” has become all too familiar. Beginning Oct. 1, however, the National Weather Service (NWS) has changed the lingo when it comes to cold weather announcements, dumping the term “wind chill.”A “Wind Chill Watch” will now be called an “Extreme Cold Watch,” and a “Wind Chill Warning” is now an “Extreme Cold Warning.” They will be issued when dangerously cold air, with or without wind, is in the forecast.

Maks and Tatiana Krasnyak and their 6-year-old daughter, Zhenya, are approached their one-year anniversary of moving to Watertown. Brad Johnson of Watertown was elected president of the board of directors for the South Dakota Wildlife Federation during the group’s meeting last weekend. Johnson replaces outgoing President Zachery Hunke, also of Watertown. Hunke will retain a spot on the board as immediate past-president. Johnson has been a vice-president of the S.D. Wildlife Federation and was recently appointed to the board of the National Wildlife Federation.

The South Dakota Unified Judicial System is warning the public about a phone or email scam in which individuals pose as law enforcement and falsely claim that the recipient has missed jury duty, owes fines and will be arrested if they don’t pay. The scam, which claims people are in imminent danger of arrest for missing jury duty, is designed to create panic and pressure victims into providing personal information or making immediate payments to avoid arrest.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture is accepting offers for more than 2.2 million acres from agricultural producers and private landowners through this year’s Grassland, General, and Continuous Conservation Reserve Program signups administered by USDA’s Farm Service Agency. With these accepted acres, enrollment is near the 27 million CRP acreage cap.

The South Dakota Unified Judicial System has launched a new ePay website for people to pay their court fees, fines, costs and restitution online. UJS designed the new payment website to provide a more user-friendly interface, making it easier and faster for individuals to locate their court cases and make a payment. The new payment portal allows users to search for criminal and traffic cases with outstanding financial balances by simply entering their last name and date of birth.
