    WASHINGTON — The US Department of Agriculture in its March 31 Prospective Plantings report said processors indicated their cooperative member-growers intend to plant 1,132,000 acres of sugar beets in 2025, up 27,700 acres, or 2.5%, from 1,104,300 acres planted in 2024. The increase was a surprise to some in the industry who expected planted area may be reduced in 2025 because of strong production and ample sugar supplies from the 2024 crop.

    KANSAS CITY — The US Department of Agriculture in its annual Honey report March 14 said US honey production in 2024 was down 3.6% from 2023 despite a 2.6% increase in the number of colonies as yield per colony dropped 6%. Honey production totaled 134,393,000 lbs, down 3.6% from 139,471,000 lbs in 2023. There were 2,597,000 honey producing colonies in 2024, up 2.6% from 2,532,000 colonies in 2023. Honey yield per colony averaged 51.7 lbs in 2024, down 6% from 55.1 lbs in 2023.

    BAY CITY, MICH. — The Michigan Sugar Co. on March 14 said it had completed a share redemption program through which cooperative grower-owners in Ontario, Can., sold back 3,582 shares (or acres), reducing the cooperative’s sugar beet area in Canada to 7,316 acres, or about 33% of the total 10,898 acres.     After the redemption, Michigan Sugar now has 57 shareholders in Ontario’s Dover growing region that is made up of Kent and Lambton counties.
