Met Éireann has issued a Status Orange weather warning for Co Wicklow, cautioning of heavy downpours and a risk of localised flooding. The warning is in place until 11am on Saturday. The Easter Bank Holiday has got off to a wet start with a yellow rainfall warning for the counties of Mayo, Cork, Clare, Kerry, Cork, Waterford, Kilkenny, Carlow, Wexford, Dublin and Louth, Down and Antrim from 6am on Friday to 6am on Saturday.

A major fire at the Thornton Recycling Centre in Dunboyne was still smouldering this morning. Three units from Meath County Council fire brigade fought the blaze which broke out at around 10pm on Thursday night. The recycling centre is in the Dunboyne Industrial Estate, but no other premises were affected by the fire. A Garda spokesman said no injuries were reported and foul play is not suspected. “Gardaí were alerted to a fire at an industrial unit in Dunboyne, County Meath.

A 58-year-old Catholic priest has been arrested in Derry on suspicion of attempted sexual communication with a child. The man was targeted by so-called “paedophile hunters” and video footage of them confronting him outside a hotel has been widely shared on social media. The Catholic Church in Derry said it is aware of an incident. “The diocese knows that a video of the incident has been posted online and we understand the PSNI have been involved.

On June 22, 1922, British Field Marshal Sir Henry Wilson, considered a great hero of World War One who helped bring that battle to an end, unveiled a memorial at Liverpool Street station in London to the 1,200 men of the Great Eastern Railway Company who had died in the Great War. At approximately 2:30 pm that afternoon, he was gunned down on the doorstep of his home in Belgravia by two London-born veterans of that war, men who had become IRA volunteers — Reginald Dunne and Joe O’Sullivan.

Three of Ireland’s most prominent astronomical sites will be put forward for world heritage site status from the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation, known as Unesco. Birr Observatory in Co Offaly, Dunsink Observatory in Dublin and the Armagh Observatory and Planetarium are part of a cross-Border plan to highlight the country’s legacy in astronomy. The three sites formed the Astronomical Observatories of Ireland (AOI) in 2023to create a programme of joint work.
