    A convicted Real IRA bomber was among the speakers at a rally to celebrate the victory of the Soviet Union over Nazi Germany 80 years ago in the second World War. John Connolly was jailed in 2002 for 14 years having been found in Co Fermanagh by undercover British soldiers with a mortar bomb, on his way to blow up a police station on Armistice Day in 2000. Connolly is a member of the Truth and Neutrality Alliance, an anti-Nato, pro-neutrality group that is sympathetic to Russia.

    Some time over the May bank holiday weekend vandals entered a temporary Office of Public Works (OPW) depot at Donaghcumper House, overlooking the river Liffey in Celbridge, Co Kildare. They first cut the wires to the house’s CCTV units, then overturned four vehicles and dumped a cherrypicker into the river. The cost of the damage is estimated at €500,000, which could rise to €700,000 if the vehicles have to be replaced.

    At 1.25pm on May 7th, 1945 Germany surrendered to the Allies in the town of Reims in France, the headquarters of Allied supreme commander Dwight D Eisenhower. The second World War in Europe was over. It had lasted six years and left much of the continent in ruins. The news was greeted with jubilation across the world and even with some relief in vanquished Germany. The news reached Ireland at 2pm via BBC radio.

    Another glorious day of sunshine is expected on Thursday and weather in Ireland is likely to stay fair for another weekend. There will be very pleasant sunshine and warm temperatures especially in the south and west with highest temperatures of 19 degrees expected In Cork and Clare, according to Met Éireann. It will feel notably cooler on the east coast with a stiff easterly breeze keeping temperatures as low as just 12 degrees.

    Twenty pipe bombs were found by gardaí in Ardee, Co Louth on Wednesday. The explosives were discovered following an intelligence-led operation linked to the seizure of cannabis valued at €190,000 on April 29th. A cordon was established around the find and the Army Explosive Ordnance Disposal (EOD) team attended the scene. The EOD team examined the suspect devices and subsequently made them safe. The devices were removed from the area for further examination and the cordon lifted.
