Speaking to Jason Jedlinski and Erik Bursch on a recent Webinar, I realised that to get really good at product, we need to get out of the JTBD (jobs to be done) mentality. Don’t get me wrong, there is a time for it because we need to get things done. But that simply can’t be the status quo to be effective. If we work in isolation we build bricks, not a house. It’s one of the subtle nuances between project management and product management. Project is about delivering on a specific goal.

In the past couple of years, several newspaper publications with paywalls have given subscribers a new benefit: They allowed them to share articles with friends and family for free. At Hearst Newspapers, we added a second wrinkle: requiring anonymous gift recipients to register an e-mail address to redeem the article view. Our hope was that this would result in a “two-fer,” creating an uplift to both our retention and acquisition efforts.

When it became clear over a decade ago that advertising alone could not sustain the news industry, news publishers increasingly turned to subscriptions. Now we need to look beyond subscriptions to other reader revenue approaches which address the needs of more of the audience and a wider range of publications. In the noughties, I was in a strategy role at NewsCorp and had long been concerned about advertising’s dependability as a single digital revenue stream.
