At least an hour before dawn, birders start to arrive at a remote site seven miles southeast of the tiny town of Parlin, in southwestern Colorado. Bundled up against the cold, the visitors unload spotting scopes, binoculars, cameras with bulky zoom lenses, and steaming thermoses of coffee. They are cautioned to shut car doors as slowly and quietly as possible and to avoid making any other noises that could spook the birds.

On March 14, 1969, University of Colorado Russian history professor Thomas Riha went to a dinner party at a friend’s house. Brittany Pettersen’s message to Congress: “Don’t f— with moms.”That’s what the Colorado congresswoman told reporters after she held her nine-week-old son, Sam, while making an emotional plea on the House floor Tuesday. Over the last decade, a slew of U.S. cities—including Boulder, Albany, Austin, Baton Rouge, Chicago, Cleveland, and Seattle—have considered building aerial trams that would whisk commuters high above rush hour. None of the seven have pulled it off. Now it’s Denver’s turn to dream big, or at least, that’s what businessman Ryan Ross believes.

When you’re on vacation, taking a seat at the hotel bar and ordering a decadent cocktail feels like a true treat, especially after a long day of travel. But even for locals, hotel bars seem to have an undeniable draw. Maybe it’s because they typically incorporate gorgeous interior design and deliver consistently good service. Or maybe it’s the prime people-watching.
