If you’ve done a multiday rafting trip on the Rio Grande downstream of Boquillas in the Big Bend region, you probably lugged your boat off the river on a small sandy beach at Heath Canyon Ranch. If you’ve paddled the Lower Canyons, you likely launched from the same remote spot in the desert.

Walking among the weird spires of rock that sprout like giant mushrooms in Big Bend Ranch State Park feels like wandering the set of the original Star Trek series. The sand-colored hoodoos—some as tall as a two-story building—look otherworldly, but they developed naturally. Most folks don’t need straws – or single-use plastics in general – but we use them anyway, because someone hands them to us. (And yes, I understand some people need straws because of coordination or medical issues. That’s fine.)I avoid straws and other single-use plastics when I can, which is most of the time.
