I’m buzzing my way up the cactus- and scrub-lined Lost Mines Trail at Big Bend National Park in Far West Texas in the dark on a mission to make it to the top before sunrise. I break into a trot and hop over a tarantula that crawls out of a hole in the rocks along the path. And I give thanks to my SCARPA Rush 2 Pro Mid GTX hikers, which let me move quickly while providing enough support to clamber over smooth, slick rock and patches of loose gravel without slipping.

From my vantage point on the side of a rocky slope high above the Rio Grande, the river looks like a glinting horseshoe far below. I think it’s the best view in the Big Bend region, and that’s saying a lot. I’ve spent hours gazing down at the rippling desert floor from the South Rim, watching the sun sink behind the Window in the Chisos Basin and peering upriver at Santa Elena Canyon. But this view, from the western edge of Mesa de Anguila, surpasses all of those, and few hikers make the trip.

Colleen Tuohy pulls up to a coffee shop in Missoula with her bird dog, Patsy Cline, napping in a crate in the back of her vehicle. She kicks the dirt off her brown leather cowboy boots, tugs a green wool jacket around her, and adjusts the worn felt hat on her head. She’s come straight from bird hunting, she says, and a cup of coffee sounds great.
