    So far we have Fianna Fáil on 43 seats, Fine Gael 36, Sinn Féin 36, Independents/Others 21, Social Democrats 11, Labour 9, People Before Profit 3, Aontú 2 and the Green Party losing all but one seat. It took some 43 hours for a first person to be elected in this constituency, with Fine Gael’s David Maxwell filling the shoes of departing Social Protection Minister, Heather Humphreys. There are five seats to fill in total here, meaning it could be a while yet before it’s all complete.

    The second day of the 2024 General election count in Dundalk began at 9.00 this morning with the top three candidates at this stage, Sinn Féin’s Ruairí Ó Murchú and Joanna Byrne and Labour’s Ged Nash all in an unassailable position. Fighting it out for the final two seats are Erin McGreehan (FF), Paula Butterly (FG) and Alison Comyn of Fianna Fáil so the likelihood is that Louth will have three female TDs in the next Dáíl.

    The counting of votes continues in Dundalk and after the 13tch count there is still no candidate over the line. The outcome of that 13th count is on hold, for a while at least, as Aontú candidate Michael O’Dowd has asked for a recheck of his vote which was announced as 2650 which is just six votes short of the number which would allow him reclaim his expenses of over €8,000. Mr. O’Dowd told Drogheda Life that he had no regrets about standing for Aontú in this election.
