A farming showcase to share the wonders of the countryside has been hailed a huge success as it drew thousands of visitors to Harrogate this weekend. Springtime Live, hosted by the Yorkshire Agricultural Society (YAS) as organisers of the Great Yorkshire Show (GYS), aims to capture the imaginations of a younger generation. As well as sheep and pigs there were heavy horses, exotic animals and creepy crawlies, along with demonstrations and workshops in activities from crafting to drystone walling.

Owners of Harrogate's Ripley Castle estate, to be sold for the first time in its 700-year history, had offered villagers first 'dibs' at its town hall at a greatly discounted rate. But with a promised funding pot for the community scrapped by Labour's new Government, hopes were thrown into disarray just weeks ago. Now, as the National Lottery Heritage Fund agrees to increase its stake with more funding, two generous benefactors have also pledged significant donations and loans.

One of the world's oldest surviving water towers is to be restored in York as a rehearsal space for some of the city's brass bands. The Grade II-Listed water tower – with its 5,000-gallon tank on the roof – was built in 1839 to supply water to steam locos from the 1840s. Built even before the city's main railway station, it has fallen into considerable disrepair over recent years but plans have been approved for a new lease of life.

A global spotlight on river pollution is to shine on Yorkshire in coming days as public views are sought on cleaning up the country's waterways. The People's Commission on the Water Sector has been set up by campaigning experts to rival the Government's own promised process. It is to see a series of four public events, with just one in the North to see a special meeting in Knaresborough next Monday, on March 31.

A deaf scientist from York has spoken of smashing sector stereotypes as she challenges her disability to explore how the human voice works. Dr Sophie Meekings is sharing her story as part of a campaign to champion trailblazers in the science, technology, engineering, and maths (STEM) sector. A neuroscientist, her work is to study what people's brains do when they're having a conversation, and how that differs for those who have a disability that affects their speech.
