Now dozens of volunteers, in a new project, are monitoring marine life in the region through set 10-minute 'watches'. They might see minke whales, or harbour seals. Already, a dolphin known as Runny Paint is causing excitement. The Shorewatch scheme taps into a national effort to monitor marine mammals. At Bempton Cliffs, 28 trained volunteers are taking part using special binoculars. RSPB administrator Susanna O’Neill is one of them.

A researcher from Leeds insists that "life doesn't stop" as she completes the world's highest marathon just a year after being diagnosed with incurable cancer. Shaunna Burke has dedicated her whole career to exploring how exercise can be used in cancer treatment, but was herself diagnosed with stage four breast cancer in 2024. Now, braving high altitude, freezing temperatures and rough terrain, she has completed the Everest Marathon in aid of Macmillan Cancer Support.

Heritage Doncaster is home to a museum and archive for the King's Own Yorkshire Light Infantry (KOYLI) collection. Now thanks to nearly £100,000 funding from the National Lottery Heritage Fund, volunteers delve deeper with a new research and collections centre. It makes a space for a "huge" archive filled with documents and photographs, to be scanned and digitised, or exploring soldiers' medal sets for family research.

A hefty fine of £350,000 has been handed to Yorkshire Water after a York waterway was polluted with foul sewage. The water company, appearing at York Magistrates Court on Friday to face sentencing, had admitted the offences in November last year. It faced charges of illegally polluting Foss Dyke with sewage, and of failing to maintain a pump at the pumping station. Yorkshire Water had been aware the backup pump wasn't working for five months, the court heard.

Policing leads in Sheffield have praised a life-saving nasal spray after an officer was able to save a man suffering a drug overdose in the city. PC Josh Brett, with South Yorkshire Police (SYP), found the man unresponsive in the city centre earlier this month. Teams were trained on how to use Naloxone in December, a medicine that rapidly reverses the effects of an overdose from drugs such as heroin or fentanyl.
