    Amid a worsening domestic violence crisis in Western Australia's far north a family support hub has opened in Broome. According to police data there were 2,018 call-outs for family and domestic violence in the region in the first three months of this year. The rate has increased every year for the last six years. The Broome facility, Bibimbiya Jan-ga Buru – meaning women and children's healing place – will support locals as well as Derby and Bidyadanga residents.

    Consumer Protection in Western Australia's north says there has been an increase in social media scams targeting prospective renters. Rental prices in Broome rose 11.1 per cent in the last quarter, according to the Real Estate Institute of WA. Rental advocacy groups want tighter regulations around tenancy applications to protect prospective renters from scams.

    Marine researchers have been unable to determine why 10 whales stranded themselves on Western Australia's far north earlier this year. The melon-headed whales were found by residents at Crab Creek, east of Broome and about 2,000 kilometres north of Perth, in January. Melon-headed whales are small, toothed whales belonging to the oceanic dolphin family.

    Kimberley residents are being urged to vaccinate their children for whooping cough on time, with cases of the potentially deadly disease in the region on track to exceed last year's spike in numbers. Pertussis, the bacterial respiratory disease colloquially known as whooping cough, is highly infectious and can be fatal in young children and newborns. The bacteria can spread via airborne droplets when an infectious person coughs or sneezes, potentially putting those around them at risk.

    A support service for victims of sexual assault in Western Australia's north says the community should be deeply concerned by two alleged public attacks in one of the Kimberley's main towns. Men have been arrested and charged in connection with both alleged attacks, with both due to face court again in coming weeks. Both the unconnected attacks were reported in Broome, 2,000 kilometres north of Perth, in the past seven days.
